University of Kentucky Libraries has honored W. Brent Seales, Ph.D., the Stanley and Karen Pigman Chair of Heritage Science and Professor of Computer Science, as the 2025 recipient of the UK Libraries Medallion for Intellectual Achievement.

The annual Pigman College of Engineering Faculty Awards ceremony was held on May 1 at Malone's Prime and Events. Awards were given in the areas of research, service and graduate studies.

Pigman College of Engineering hosts first ever Capstone Design Showcase

On April 28, the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering hosted its first ever Capstone Design Showcase in the Gatton Student Center.  The event showcased 56 Capstone projects from over 200 students from seven engineering disciplines. Featured disciplines were biomedical engineering, biosystems and agricultural engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, engineering technology and materials engineering.

EduceLab unveiled as UK’s gateway to next-generation heritage science

Made possible by a $14 million infrastructure grant from the National Science Foundation, EduceLab is the university’s bold vision for next-generation heritage science. The lab was unveiled during a “soft opening” last week — launching a new era of discovery, education and innovation at the intersection of the humanities, engineering and data science.

Pigman College of Engineering inducts 2025 class into Hall of Distinction

Initiated in 1992, the Hall of Distinction recognizes and honors UK Engineering alumni for exemplary professional accomplishments, outstanding character and an ongoing commitment to community service. Every member of the Hall of Distinction is honored with a plaque in the lobby of the Ralph G. Anderson Mechanical Engineering Building. All members and extended bios are listed here.

Roghanchi, Schafrik, Moradi, Agioutantis, Siddique and Wilson receive grant to implement courses on artificial intelligence in the mining industry.

UK Pigman College of Engineering researchers in the Department of Mining Engineering Pedram Roghanchi (PI), Zach Agioutantis (Co-I), Ali Moradi (Co-I) and Steven Schafrik (Co-I), Muhammad Abu Bakar Siddique (Co-I) in the Department of Computer Science and Sarah Wilson (Co-I) in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering have received a nearly $442,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for their project, "IGE Track 1: Integrating Artificial Intelligence Technologies into Mining Education." 

UK researcher enhances police de-escalation training with immersive AI, VR simulations

De-escalation training is a vital tool for police officers — helping to reduce the need for force and ensuring safer outcomes for everyone involved in a tense situation. Stephen Ware, associate professor in the Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering at the University of Kentucky, has been working to enhance officer training through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR).

Ph.D. student named 2025 CPS Rising Star

Afsaneh Mahanipour, a graduate student in the Pigman College of Engineering , was one of 30 scholars from across the nation selected as a 2025 Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) Rising Star. Selected scholars attend the Rising Stars Workshop, hosted by Vanderbilt University. Mahanipour is a Ph.D. candidate in Department of Computer Science, under the supervision of  Hana Khamfroush, Ph.D.
